EXAMINATIONS
Preoperative Eye Examination
Prior to surgery, patients must undergo a preoperative medical exam (with a general or internal medicine specialist). This includes blood and urine analysis, EKG, and possibly chest X-ray. Additional specialist consultations may be needed.
Cataract and glaucoma surgery requires:
Refraction
Tonometry
Pachymetry
Visual acuity testing
Slit-lamp exam
Fundoscopy
Biometry – intraocular lens measurement
Endothelium count
Topography if astigmatism is detected
Additional testing (e.g., OCT) as needed
Retina surgery requires similar testing plus OCT of the macula.
Eyelid/plastic surgery requires preoperative tests for blood clotting. Surgery is performed under local anesthesia.
Cataract (Kataract) and Glaucoma Surgery
The preoperative examination before these procedures includes refraction, i.e., testing visual acuity with and without glasses, intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry), and pachymetry, which measures corneal thickness.
It also includes:
- Visual acuity (visus) – reading a distance chart with and without glasses using a special optotype
- Slit-lamp examination – biomicroscopy
- Fundus examination – fundoscopy
- Intraocular lens measurement – biometry
- Endothelium cell count
If astigmatism (cylinder) is detected, corneal topography is performed to assess the surface and curvature of the cornea. Based on these results, the patient may be referred for additional specialized tests to detect retinal changes, such as OCT of the retina or OCT of the optic nerve head.

Retinal Surgery
The preoperative examination before a retinal procedure includes similar tests as for cataract or
glaucoma surgery:
- Refraction – current diopter measurement
- Intraocular pressure measurement
- Pachymetry – corneal thickness measurement
- Visual acuity testing – reading a distance chart with and without glasses
- OCT of the macula

Aesthetic Oculoplastic Surgery and Eyelid Procedures
Before undergoing these types of procedures, patients need a preoperative blood test focused on coagulation parameters to assess blood clotting. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and the patient is not put to sleep.
During the procedure, you can rely on our team of specialists.
